Rethinking Research, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Maurice E. Müller, chief of orthopedic surgery in Bern in the 1960s, had a vision of using the latest technologies to advance medical research.

Since then, there has been close collaboration in Bern between engineers, physicians, and nursing staff, which continues to evolve. This allows existing gaps in research, diagnosis, and treatment to be addressed, making medicine more personalized, effective, and sustainable. This is a particularly relevant endeavor, especially in light of rising healthcare costs and the ongoing shortage of skilled workers.

For example, with the help of modern technologies, patient monitoring can increasingly take place outside the hospital, or data can be processed more quickly and accurately using AI.

In Bern, we embrace diversity to provide healthcare professionals and patients with innovative and practical healthcare solutions.

Bern as a Hub for Translational Medicine

At the heart of the successful collaboration in Bern’s medical community lies the long-standing and proven partnership between the two leading institutions, the University of Bern and Inselspital.

This collaboration is complemented by a variety of specialized and innovative units such as the ARTOG Center for Biomedical Research, the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (CAIM), the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM), the BFH Engineering Labs, and the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (sitem-insel).

Each of these institutions contributes its specific expertise to advance research in its respective fields. This enables the sustainable achievement of the long-term goals of better medical care for all patients and strengthens medical innovation in the Bern region.
