Gender-Specific Medicine: Research That Makes a Difference
Biological and psychosocial gender influences the development, presentation, and treatment of diseases. Physical differences, such as body type or metabolism, affect disease risks and drug responses, while sociocultural factors, such as stress management or risk-taking behavior, also play a role.
Despite these well-known differences, they are still not sufficiently taken into account in medical practice. Women are particularly affected, as many treatment guidelines are based on studies with male participants and neglect symptoms or treatment responses specific to women. The Faculty of Medicine aims to permanently integrate gender-specific aspects into research, teaching, and practice through an endowed professorship.
To ensure gender-sensitive healthcare, it is essential that future healthcare professionals are made aware of gender differences in medicine during their training.
